From the eyes of a Couch Potato...

This post has been chosen as one of Blogadda's  Spicy Saturday Pick. Thanks!
As I sit in front of this laptop and struggle to get out few words I have decided that I will not peek into my browser because Internet is such a web that once you get entangled in it, it becomes difficult to get out. As you all know I have been struggling with words to put it simply I am suffering from something dreadful called “Writers Block” it was something which I thought would never touch me but I guess the long break from office has made me lazy and being with Mom has made me lazier :D Add to the fact that as soon as I think of switching on my laptop the sunson rises without fail ;)

These days I have been doing nothing besides taking care of the l’lle one and watching TV :D in fact I have become a couch potato. So what better than telling what I think about the current TV scenario?

Let’s start with the queen i.e. Madhuri Dixit was a beauty, is a beauty and will always remain one. She might have gained some extra pounds but it goes without saying that they don’t make like her anymore. She smiles with same warmth which her persona exudes. As far as Jhalak Dikh La Ja  is concerned I will reserve my views as it is early days but the much anticipated premier episode was a dampener. But yes I absolutely love all the three judges.

Have been watching both the versions of Masterchef i.e. the Indian  & the Australian version and I must say they are as different as chalk and cheese. While our version is full of emotional drama and injuries (in the latest episode it even became Big Bossish with Pankaj shouting her lungs out) the Australian version is so damn professional.

Though am a pure vegetarian and the dishes in the Australian version are beyond me but I love the passion with which the participants cook and the passion with it is judged. On the other hand a specific episode of the Indian version had my blood boiling, it was the one where the judges wanted to prove to Jaynandan that the vegetables that he had cut were not perfect and how did they prove it? By throwing the unused, freshly cut vegetables into the dustbin. I was like WTH! In fact the judges in our version are too busy spiking their hair, wearing shiny suits & they don’t exude the same professionalism. The episode in which they had called in the families to judge was just too much for me and the icing on the cake was a kid tasting and judging the dishes. I hope next year they are much more professional and mend their mistakes which they can start that by dropping Akshay Kumar who is over acting & over reacting in there.

Then there is Koffee with Karan Season 3 , I had too many expectations from the show and it is turning out to be just another show. There is unnecessary bitching in the show, in “The Rapid Fire Round” one of the most awaited sections of the show, KJo has been asking the same questions to all the guests. Where is the novelty man?

When I think of KWK the next thing that comes to my mind is the news channels. The buggers see the ad of the upcoming episode and create an half an hour news item on that. “BREAKING NEWS; “When asked who is the sexiest of all, Kareena rates Shahid as sexist and Saif makes face”. When you see the episode things are very different and you realize that ad was nothing but slick marketing of copy & paste only to achieve high TRP’s and our new channels fall for it hook line & sinker by promoting it unnecessarily on their channels. All of this makes me ask the same question again, when there is so much to report and work on why are the news channels chasing no news or why are they into making baking & creating news?

An example of the no news getting the importance of breaking news is “Sheila Vs Munni” and the best part is almost all new channels doing an half an hour program on it. I would have laughed on their histrionics had this been a one off thing.

BTW that reminds me my Son just totally loves Sheila ki Jawani and he stops doing whatever he is doing just to stare at the T.V. he even stops chewing his fingers which trust me is a major thing for him.

Anyway as I was saying, the worst reporting which I saw was during the Varanasi Blast when a person called up a specific new channel and the following ensued.

Reporter: we have on line Mr. X who was an eye witness to the blast, so Mr. X please tell us what did you see.

Mr. X: there was a huge blast near Y Ghat.

Reporter: Where were you when the blast occurred?

Mr. X: We were in the boat opposite the ghat, some 3 kms away.

Reporter: What happened? Did you see the blast?

Mr. X: There was a loud noise and a chaos

Reporter: Do you think there were some deaths?

Mr. X: We were very far but I am sure someone must have died.

Reporter: So you have heard the account of an eye witness. *repeats whatever the person had said and adds* he believes that there might have been some deaths.

Other programs which have caught my fancy are Highway on My Plate & Chakh Le Academy. Rocky & Mayur from HOMP plate are just awesome, what sense of humor and what lovely places they take us to. I am always busy swooning, slurping & yearning to trail behind them. I also envy them for doing something that enjoy and eating all the way :D

I even saw two movies which I had been wanting to watch, Shall We Dance & Marley & Me . I loved the former for the simplicity of its theme i.e. of enjoying the life & not just living it. As far as Marley & Me is concerned, I have never kept and pets & neither been fond of the idea of keeping one but the movie touched me like hell. I had not expected to like this simple little film but what was totally shocking was me with tears in my eyes at the end of movie. Some movies I tell you.
Besides that I have been wanting to watch Band Bajaa Baraat but it isn’t possible for next few months but Ranvir Singh the hero for sure looks promising. Have you guys seen the movie? How’s it?

Hmmm I guess this is it, have you guys been watching TV the way I have been? Do share your views.

Coming up next are the reviews of Another Chance by Ahmed Faiyaz & Urban Shots a collection of short stories which FYI has the first published work of our fellow blogger Prateek.

Not having watched any of the shows that you have mentioned, I have no opinion on them :(

Your son likes Sheila ki Jawaani :) Salman Khan might not be to happy to hear that!

Waiting for your reviews! It has been a while :)

potato ! thats exactly how you are now ! Buhahahahahaha !!!

yeah, you kept making fun of others (read me) when they were in writers block. Im so happy that you are getting it all back !! Im thinking of believing in God now ! :D :D

When there are a lot of good shows in Discovery and National Geographic, where you get to see your cousins and relatives (read monkeys and apes), why do you have to resort to shitty glorified cookery shows ! :D :D :D :D :D Very soon, you will start watching all those saas bahu serials also ! :D :D :D

LOL, the lill one loves shiela, eh? Boy o boy, you are going to have a tough time with him, mark my words !!! and his uncle vimmuuu is going to spoil him even more, watch out ! :D :D :D

I heard BBB is good, but the movie is a box office disaster! Anushka turns me off, so not watching it in
even in pirated ! :D :D :D

Koffee with Karan has become absolutely trash... I stuck to News Channels or Sitcoms these days.

I totally agree with you on Marley & Me absolutely loved the movie.

BBB is an awesome flick, good to watch. Will keep you entertained :-)

I love masterchef Australia, so professional and engrossing.
Not much of a TV watcher but I've caught a few episodes Of KWK and find it completely shallow. When do you think we will have talk shows like Oprah Winfrey's? And less said about the serials the better.
Enjoy your days with mommy. All hell will break loose once the little one learns to walk.

I dnt watch TV much, but HOMP is one of my favvv favvv pgms :) I like Gourmet Central too :)
I so wanna watch Marley and Me after reading ur review :)

Crafty Shines said...

I didn't catch a single episode of Masterchef India... but colleagues have told me the same things... too much drama, and very less content that's actually anywhere close to Masterchef Australia.

These publicity stunts...sheesh... There was a lot of hype on the Deepika & Sonam interview too, and things they said about Ranbir, blah blah!! Or like the lil one says now, goo goo gaa gaaaa! :D

He likes Sheila ki Jawaani??!! Boys!!!!! All the best Smita! :D

I've seen Marley & Me, and had read the book too. DOGGIES!!!! sigh! :D

Smita, I'd given this suggestion to another blogger too... if you haven't watched "The Party" - Peter Sellers, PLISS DO!!!! trust me, you'll love it! :D

Hope ur taking care! ((((((((((((hugs)))))))))))))

Crafty Shines said...

Shall We Dance!! I used to wait for that scene when they dance to "When Marimba Rhythm starts to play, dance with me...", just to hear that song...

Much later, Hitchu sent me one sung by Deam Martin, a much older version,
ooooh!!!!! :D :D :D

I love that movie just for that song, and erm, Richard :D

Its been ages I have watched TV...

So totally off-fashion.. :)

I do watch movies but on my laptop or in theater.

I was at home for a week, and the shows that I watched were 'Modern Family', 'Friends' (of course) and 'How I Met Your Mother'. To my dismay, I was also catching up on a daily soap called 'Pratigya' :-( And yeah, there's a good one 'Minute to Win It' on AXN. Really good one! And I did watch all episodes of KWK on YouTube! It is just so catty. First he asks Kareena one question, she makes comment about Priyanka...then he asks response on the comment from Priyanka...and his show will go on!

SR said...

Smita, you should read the book "Marley and Me" - u probably already have!! If not read it..

You echo all my feelings for these TV shows.....though, i havent seen jhalak . I too want to see BBB badly, inshallh pirated DVD soon.

Reema said...

Ahh my TV watching is restricted to Mahabharat re run on Star Utsav and Masterchef Australia :) LOL @ the eye witness account.

Abhishek said...

Wow! You almost put my thoughts in words. But then is that really a surprise!

Our channels have licensed foreign shows (even Jhalak is Indian version of Dancing With Stars) but in order to customize for Indian audience they make them look like soaps!

Varun said...

Living in Nigeria, I am missing out on all these things. Came here last week! Marley and Me is one of my favourites. Read the book if you can! I am sure you'll love it more! I so wanted to Band Baaja Baarat but had to fly the next day and missed it :( Will be returning only by march and will have lots of movies to catch!

Indian reality shows for me as so filled with drama that I dont consider them reality any more. They can take any show throw the whole professionalism out and make it such such a stupid show. KWK has been disappointing so far.

Avada Kedavra said...

I dont watch many reality shows since I find them boring.. too much of drama and nothing they show is real.. But I enjoyed watching KWK because of all the entertainment.. had a good laugh.. You indeed have become a couch potato :) Lil one likes Shiela..that's something.. Glad to see you back..waiting for your reviews!

Hey Monika :)

That was the sourest point of the show and I was totally with Kandlaji on that! I don't think that the contestants were not in a right frame of mind to judge the dishes with honesty.

No I haven't read the book but I think will pick it up soon!! :)

Hey Bhags :)

I am so totally with u the contestants are dignified and look like they are there seriously.

I liked this weeks episode of PC & Shahid, they were so much into eachother that KJo was struck!

Hey Tarun :)

Hey Prats :)

U think news channels are worth a dekho? :D :D :D

I had read ur twitter status about the movie but sigh! no theater visit for some time :D

Hey Aparna :)

We already have an answer to Oprah Winfrey show, what u haven't watched Rakhi ka Insaaf??? :D :D Lady we are totally regressive as far as TV is concerned!!!

Hell has already broken he has started crawling but win a reverse motion and on his back!! :D :D :D

Hey Swaram :)

Do watch it, its worth a dekho! :)

Hey Crafty :)

It is ur good luck that u haven't seen MCI vaise despite the cribbings I watch it for the sheer fact that I love cooking related shows!! Guess my love for food ;)

U know what? I have started hating Deepkia, she talks too much acts quite little and looks horrible!

He loves Sheila ki Jawani & Munni as well :D

Hows the book? and which is better book or movie?

The Party? OK WIll loook out for it.

Richard is something else no? Ah that salt pepper hair!!!!

Smita said...

Hey Mumbai Diva :)

Glad u agree with me :)

Hey Makk :)

U don't watch TV?? :o

But I guess u save loads of time that ways :)

Hey penandpaper :)

I used to watch Pratigya kabhi kabhi! Such a regressive serial.

U r so right, that is his way of making the serial go on and get enough bytes! These days it is more about bitching!

BTW @ Home for a week? All well?

Hey SR :)

Hey Bikramjit :)

Actually I do :D

Hey Reema :)

Just those 2? hmmmmm....

Hey Abhishek :)

Eaxctly! Our people love drama and these people serve it!

Hey Varun :)

You shocked me with Nigeria. Will surely read the book as so many people have reccoed it.

You surely have so many movies to watch! Enjoy your stint there.

Hey Vimmuuu :)

Lo ji doing that only!

Hey Sree :)

Thanks!

It irks specially with the way the veggie prices have been these days!

I am doing good! And son's snaps on my blog? Not very sure about it :) hehehehe

Hey Vibhuti :)

Welcome to my blog :)

Glad u liked the post!

Hey Broca's :)

Oh man!!! I sooooo relate to all the things you have mentioned in this one...

1. Madhuri is the ultimate diva, she was and will always remain the queen of hearts! Simply love her! :)

2. I simply love the US Masterchef.. Indian one just put me off.. there was so much of drama put in that it turned me off!! While in the US one, all they are concerned with is food. They dont care who you are and where you are from! And I love that!

3. I share your thoughts about KWK. Frankly I was waiting for it too.. but it turned out to be a major disappointment.

Nice to be back to reading your blogs :)

Congrats! The selection by blogadda is well deserved :)

The only show I used to watch was Big Boss which ended y'day. I did catch an episode of KWK and surprisingly didnt get hooked. I used to look forward to the episodes in its previous seasons. But this year its become quite predictable and unnecessarily bitchy like you said.

As for the news channels and their reporting the less said the better.

UmaS said...

Oh, Masterchef India sucks...I stopped watching it, after the initial episodes....

Masterchef Australia was a class apart...loved it....our whole family sat to watch it, now I miss those 9pm time slots -dont know what to do... ;)

Of course, any foodie prgrm in TLC or NDTV Good times / Star World / AXN, I am sure to be watching it all....I love them all. :) :)

It happens Smita - the couch potato syndrome and all....once the little boy is up and moving, then u'll realize that all the rest is for a certain reason...enjoy your mommy-hood. :) :) Hugs to the darling boy, who loves Sheila ki jawani !!!! ;)

Love this template of urs.... :)

Lol...love your description of anything telly :) I didn't know they decided to make an Indian version of Masterchef. I haven't been too big on MC here myself even though it's done very well...but I do occassionally watch because the food looks awesome. The 2nd season was a bit annoying with too many tears...and then they followed that with junior masterchef...which has kids cooking these fancy meals. Not for me thanks!!

And news...ah...it's crap world over I think. I thank my stars that I didn't pursue journalism when I see what the media has become...
